Abstract
Objectives: Risk communication is one of the important factors in relation to the health technologies assessment, because presenting the scientific grounds and spreading them is essential to improve better public health. The objectives of this study is to analyze media reports on the safety of herbal medicines from the viewpoint of risk communication.

Methods: Medial reports related to safety of oriental medicine were gathered by searching 3 TV stations (KBS, MBC, and SBS) and 4 newspaper companies (Chosun, Dong-a, Hankyoreh, and Kyunghyang). Total 165 news were collected for 5 years, 102 TV news and 63 newspaper articles.

Results: Two types of media were compared in terms of frame of contents, depth of information, and risk information type. According to the results, TV news and newspaper articles reported the negative contents more frequently, but this tendency was higher in TV news as 72.5% compared with that of newspapers as 44.4%. Also risk prevention information was reported more by the newspaper (58.1%) than TV (31.7%), whereas risk results information was delivered more by the TV (95.2%) than newspaper (81.4%). These differences were statistically significant.

Conclusion: Simple report on the safety issue of herbal medicines can cause the distrust toward medicines among general public. More detailed information on the prevention and outcomes of the risks need to be reported.
